Archivo Puta

Artist talk: Archivo Puta by María Riot

Location: Etage | Times: 12:00-15:00 (including break) | Tickets: Donation (suggested sliding scale €0-20) – online registration required

This infinite project in constant construction aims to unite activism and the political recognition of rights for the collective as well as appeal to the sensitivity that only art can give. She will present her work and talk about the project in more depth.

After more than ten years working in the sex industry, María Riot decides to delve deeply into artistic projects related to sexual work since art and creation is their primary motivation always. One of them is “Archivo Puta”, a project that currently has more than 600 photographs in analog and instant formats.

The project is self-taught and independent, carried out with money earned through sex work that is invested for the films, scans, prints, etc. She believes it is important to give visibility and support to projects like these as a response to classism and elitism in art and to give opportunities to subjects who are not usually part of museums, galleries or first-person narratives in art. Archivo Puta seeks to be exhibited in exhibitions and in the future to become a book of photographs and being part of a short documentary.

“Archivo Puta” is a multidisciplinary project that seeks to create archives of the present as well as recover memory, make visible the beauty and resistance of the collective. Through the photographic project, it aims to create an archive of the present since, due to stigma, many people who engage in sex work decide to hide. Although there are artistic projects about sex work, there are very few made by the sex workers themselves or without a voyeuristic gaze, with ethics and political context. Thus, it seeks to challenge the existing perspective from society towards those who engage in sex work but also the perspective from photography and art in general.

By bringing to the forefront the agency of those portrayed and making visible that the photographers themselves also share the same work activity and stigma, something that does not usually happen in the world of photography, where art, due to its lack of accessibility and resources, is not usually made massively by sex workers and our visual stories and narratives are told by others. The project arises from the need for the world to know the silenced stories of people who are stigmatized, criminalized, and persecuted solely for using sexuality as their work tool. Through the photos, captured in multiple analog formats, the sex workers are portrayed as they wish to be seen. In addition to the photo sessions with sex workers, the project includes photographs of their own world related to sex work and sexuality in their life in general: photographs on porn sets, activism, clients, hotel hallways, herself, kink, desires, fetishes, friendship and lust.

Four Chambers Special

March 29 @ 15:30 16:15 CET

Four Chambers Special: Various films by Vex Ashley

Location: Etage | Times: 15:30-16:15 | Tickets: €11,25 @ Cinetol

Four Chambers is a name that keeps popping up at every SW and porn festival we visit. So we looked into who is behind this project and it turned out to be the very talented porn performer, director and filmmaker Vex Ashley. With a art school and photography background, as well as digital sex work online, Four Chambers became a project, an idea and an ongoing collaboration with the intention to explore the aesthetic and conceptual potential of pornography as a creative medium for ideas. We handpicked several of their works as examples of some exquisite DIY works with high-end aesthetic production value from a community perspective.

Two of Swords | UK | 2022 | 13 min

An ancient symbol of the divine masculine, the sword = cock symbolism isn’t exactly subtle here. Recreated with some of my favourite sexually charged tarot imagery from the suit of swords under glowing neon red light. An occult homoerotic Bacchanalia ritual or a sweaty 3am club fuck.

Archetype | UK |  2019 | 13 min

Porn aesthetics and archetypes are fascinating, sex on film has always been innovative, at the forefront of pushing technology and creativity. Being pushed to the margins means you’re forced to make new rules and create your own visions, processes and traditions. Porn world developed its own visual language, signs and semiotics.

This is the first in a new series we’re hoping to continue exploring where we look at traditional Porn stereotypes, archetypes, aesthetics and cliches and how we can explore, subvert or expand them. Exploring some classic archetypes – play fighting, wrestling, leather bars, vests, sweat and skin we were lucky enough to be able to license the perfect brooding Berlin goth gay club soundtrack from Boy Harsher and we were good to go.

A Cyborg Manifesto | UK | 2020 | 5 min

Originally commissioned by The Museum of Sex for the CAM LIFE exhibition, ‘A Cyborg Manifesto’ is a visual essay and a personal exploration of a life spent online.

We broadcast our image in cells and pixels across continents, viewed by lenses, pushed through codecs and compression algorithms, adapting new ways to circumvent the physical. Thousands of people every day fuck and fuck themselves broadcast live via webcam. I spent 4 years from 2012-2016 live online, executing a carefully choreographed performance of authenticity – shapeshifting, adapting, morphing. My sex and self monetised for consumption, working for tips. Records of this will outlive me, videos of cam shows ripped, recorded and uploaded on illegal sites, digital time capsules or ticking time bombs.

Proximity IV | country | year | 11 min

The Proximity series was really where the project started. It aims to replicate the intensity of a sexual connection by bringing the camera in.

Highlight the intricacies and minutia of sex, things often lost in sex on screen. The closeness of the camera allows for greater focus on breath, sweat, touches that might otherwise be lost. It replicates the experience of a partner. Body parts merge and skin blends. It becomes less about clarity and more about atmosphere and experience.

about the filmmaker

Vex Ashley is a porn performer, director and filmmaker. After rejecting being demoted to “muse” spending 3 years at art school and getting naked online as a cam girl, Vex started making work as Four Chambers to expand the idea of what sex on film could say, do and be. Vex performs in, directs, edits and produces the Four Chambers project in collaboration with a partner and the performers. She speaks, writes and spends a lot of time online talking about making porn creatively and independently, sex as performance, authenticity, art and pornography, technology and sex, camming, censorship and the music of Joanna Newsom.

Vex is self taught in film making with an emphasis on collaborative DIY practices; Four Chambers now exists alongside a new wave of creators making contemporary pornographic work from a new perspective. The project remains deliberately ambiguous, rejecting labels for both their films and performers, existing in-between genres of both art and pornography and dismissing the need for a definition of either. Exploring themes of technology, symbolism, mythology and alchemy and their intrinsic intersection with sex and part of the growing decentralisation from traditional adult industry business, Four Chambers is independent, DIY, conceptual, pornography cinema.

A Guided Qleasure Practice

March 29 @ 16:30 19:30 CET

Workshop: A Guided Qleasure Practice Sex Worker Only

By Gia G

Location: Etage | Times: 16:30-19:30 | Tickets: Donation (suggested sliding scale €0-20) – online registration required

In a guided qleasure practice we will research, uncover and practice the relationship we have to qleausure.

Qleasure or queer pleasure breaks boundaries, borders and binaries. There is no norm, no right way, no wrong way, only your way. Qleasure states we are all experts when it comes to our own pleasure, we just need some time and space to figure it out sometimes.

During this practice, we will focus on the individual relationship(s) we have to pleasure. What feels good? What does my body want? How does my head want to be touched, right here, right now? We start this session by grounding in the space, checking in with the others, making some collective agreements, before we go into a guided practice followed by some free play. This workshop is focused on the relationship with your own body, not those of others. The latter is to be explored in the full 4nights series called Pleasure Nights!

This workshop will be in English, is SW-only and offers space for max 20 participants.

GiA G is a queer heaux, spicy performer and model, pleasure activist, facilitator and writer. They dedicate their practice and personal life to seeking, researching and practicing pleasure by helping people connect with their own expertise. GiA G is an infinite learner who continuously builds their knowledge through sex work, books, listening, questioning, workshops, and practicing.

They moved to Amsterdam in February 2024 primarily to escape an increasingly anti-trans and anti-porn political and social landscape.
